Rectal prolapse

Rectal prolapse is a condition where the complete  rectal wall protrudes through the anal opening, a condition more common among old persons with a history of chronic constipation. Other factors causing intra abdominal pressure can also lead to this condition e.g. BPH, pregnancy, chronic bronchitis, pelvic floor dysfunction,neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Symptoms & diagnosis

  • A mass protrudes through the anus during straining
  • Fecal incontinence,
  • Pain, discharge of mucus or rectal bleeding

Anal physiological tests like defeacography, sigmoidoscopy, manometry are used to diagnose rectal prolapse.
